Awards are the token of respect and honour conferred to the people with noteworthy achievements. The list of awards in India is vast as people have been marking great achievements in various fields. The major categories of Awards in India are;

Civilian Awards
Civilian Awards are conferred to people with outstanding achievements in their field of work. These awards are presented to the respective recipients by the President of India on Republic Day. The inception year of these Civilian awards is 1954. Civilian Awards are categorized according to the degree of honour. The Civilian awards conferred are:
- Bharat Ratna- 1st degree of honour
- Padma Vibhushan- 2nd degree of honour
- Padma Bhushan- 3rd degree of honour

Awards and Prizes of World
Nobel Prize: Nobel Prize is the most coveted and prestigious international award for intellectual achievement in the world. This prestigious award is available in various fields like medicine, physics, literature, peace, economics and also chemistry.
UNESCO Human Rights Awards: UNESCO Human Rights Awards was established in the year 1966 and is one of the famous awards that has been awarded every 5 years as a result of the contribution of an individual towards the human right establishment. The first award was given on World Human Rights Day in 1968. Malala Yousafzai received it in 2013.
Oscar Awards: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) instituted Oscar Awards or the Academy Awards in the year 1929. Bhanu Athaiya was the first Indian to get an Oscar for the movie Gandhi and also, Satyajit Ray was the first Indian to achieve lifetime achievement awards in 1992.
Civilians awards in India
Dada Saheb Phalke Awards: The Government of India gives the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema.
Bharat Ratna: Instituted in the year 1954, Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the country. This award is eligible to any person without any distinction of race, occupation, position or sex. Someone receives Bharat Ratna for the highest degrees of national service that includes literary, artistic as well as recognition of public service. It translates to Gem of India or Jewel of India.
Arjuna Award: The Government of India gives the Arjuna Award in order to recognize outstanding achievement in National Sports.
Padma Vibhushan: Second highest Civilian award in India. Padma Vibhushan is second highest civilian awards in India in various disciplines including art, social work, public affairs, medicine, literature, sports and also civil services. Every year on the occasion of Republic Day the awards are consequently announced. The award has been awarded to about 300 individuals as of the year 2017 which includes 19 non-citizen recipients and also 12 posthumous.
